Track Engineering Manager

We are currently seeking a Track Engineering Manager in our New Jersey office.

This position entails performing engineering and management duties in planning, designing, and overseeing construction of vertical and horizontal alignment of track for railroads.

Plans and develops engineering projects concerned with unique or controversial problems that have an important effect on major organization programs. This involves exploration of subject area, definition of scope and selection of problems for investigation, and development of novel concepts and approaches. Maintains liaison with individuals and units within or outside his/her organization with responsibility for acting independently on technical matters pertaining to this field. Work at this level usually requires extensive progressive experience.

 Responsibilities:

  1. Responsible for chargeability/realization goals for the personnel assigned to him/her as defined on an annual basis.
  2. Manage, direct, and mentor the track design staff (which could include subordinate supervisors or team leaders) by assigning employee resources to active projects in close coordination with the sector manager in order to meet project and client demands while maximizing chargeable ratio.
  3. Identify staffing needs to meet both short-term production requirements and long-term discipline growth goals in close coordination with the sector manager. Participate in assessment of potential new hires and recommend discipline specific requests for new hires. Maintain database of desirable hires and interview and minimally maintain quarterly contact with potential candidates to meet long-term discipline growth goals.
  4. Responsible for discipline work quality and methodology and coordination with the other sectors’ project interface for multi-disciplinary projects.
  5. Assign, manage, and perform project work including scope, schedule, and budget and produce accurate and timely financial and project reporting and client deliverables as required.
  6. Analyze survey reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, aerial photography, and other topographical or geologic data to plan projects.
  7. Technical responsibility for interpreting, organizing, executing, and coordinating projects, including the investigation, development, and approaches for the project.
  8. Ensure managers and engineers/designers are following relevant federal, state, local, and industry standards.
  9. Analyze and review the design requirements to ensure match with customers' specifications.
  10. Enforce QA/QC policies, and identify possible quality and safety issues within the scope of the project in order to fulfill project-related contractual requirements.
  11. Provide technical advice regarding design, construction, or program modifications, and track structural repairs.
  12. Write factory and field-test procedures when applicable.
  13. Review and approve designs developed by track staff and seal drawings, if licensed.
  14. Participate in developing proposals, including technical design and cost estimates and participate in client presentations to secure new work.

  16. In conjunction with sector manager, develop and implement standardized training, mentoring, incentive, evaluation, and disciplinary programs and procedures in close coordination with the HR department.
  17. Assist in building a positive image for SYSTRA by developing and managing good client relations for both existing and new clients in the public transportation and the rail industry.
  18. Pursue awards for project work and industry recognition
  19. Share business intelligence and resources with sector manager and staff to facilitate new project and market development nationwide.
  20. Share resources and intelligence with SYSTRA, S.A. partner to facilitate synergy and new project and market development worldwide.
  21. Actively maintain proficiency and develop knowledge in areas of expertise, and expand skills set of practice.

Qualifications:

  1. BS in Civil Engineering.
  2. Minimum of ten years’ relevant discipline experience.
  3. Minimum of five years’ demonstrated management experience.
  4. Proficient project management experience and skill.
  5. Leadership and communications skills to supervise and mentor subordinates.
  6. Excellent oral and written English communication skills.
  7. Experience in project management, design, inspection, and construction of major facilities and/or rail transportation projects.
  8. Must be able to supervise a staff of track engineers and designers.
  9. Must be recognized as authority in the field.

Desired Licenses and Certification

  1. PE License.
  2. PMP Certification.
  3. MS in relevant engineering field.
  4. Leadership role or membership in a relevant professional organization.
